Recreation is an activity that we just don’t seem to get quite enough of. Active recreation, is an important part of our daily lives. Or at least it should be. It’s quite easy in our fairly sedentary culture, to sit around like a bunch of blobs, and not get the active exercise our bodies need. That’s not to say that activity has to be throughly boring and dull exercise. The point of exercise, is simply to get the body moving, reduce stress and use all body parts. That’s not to say it can’t be fun. Exercise doesn’t have to be hundred push-ups followed by a hundred situps followed by a hundred pullups. Fun exercise is really good for you.
The trick to getting good exercise on a regular basis, and in an enjoyable fashion, is to find something you really enjoy doing. Making your recreational physical activity fun, is a surefire way, and an essential building block to a healthy lifestyle. The best way I’ve found to make physical activity fun, is to be sure that my exercise routine is centered around something I enjoy doing. In my case, that involves the game of squash. I enjoy playing the game so much, I don’t even think of it as exercise. As a matter of fact, I really can’t get enough of it. Too much some would say.
Once your exercise or physical activity gets to this kind of point, things get a lot easier. You may actually find yourself doing other exercises just to get yourself in better shape to do the activities you really enjoy doing. Which is really what sporting activities is all about. There was an old saying I remember reading on a gym wall. Or maybe it was a locker room wall somewhere. Either way, it was one of those motivational get active type of quotes. It said something like “get fit to play sports, don’t play sports to get fit”. I never really understood at the time what it meant, but now I do.
I played squash for years, at about the same bodyweight (I love to eat to), until I got to a certain competitive level. At which point it was hard for me to progress in the game without actually losing weight. That prompted an entire new lifestyle of choices on my part. Not only was I exercising, but now I was convincing myself to eat healthier with the intention of getting stronger, and fitter for the sake of my physical activity. I have finally gotten to the point where I really want to get fit to play sports. That’s an ideal place to be. And, if you can find something that you truly love to play, you’ll find that staying healthy can be fun.
