What would be the best birthday gift you could buy for a guy turning 40?  Well, why not the gift of youth?  It’s really simple.  Just ask him what his favorite age was.  If he could be any age, what would it be?  Not everybody may want to be 19 again.  I know I wouldn’t.  Too much confusion.  About 32 was pretty good for me.  Although, I’m working on making my current age the best of all.  However, I digress.

Once you know his age, then you just head off to your favorite time machine store, and buy any model.  They’re all pretty good.  Some have been known to have problems on the return trip, but hey that may be ok by you. 40 year olds can be a real pain in the butt sometimes anyway.  Then when he least expects it, just set the date, and flip the switch.  It’ll be the best surprise he ever had.  And you can have a few moments of pease and quiet.

Funny huh?  Or maybe not.  Well it may not be that simple to give the gift of youth these days, what with our backward technology and all, but that doesn’t mean were totally beat here.  We need to use our imagination just a little bit.  The gift of youth would really be a great gift.  Even if only lasts for a few days, hours or even minutes.  How exactly would we do that?

Let’s build our own little time machine in the room where Mr Needs-a-40th-birthday-gift will be having his birthday party.

Well, I’ve found that nostalgia always works.  Maybe we can’t travel back in time to our favorite age, but we can bring a few things from those days into our current time.  Music is an easy one of course.  Get a list of your birthday guys favourite songs from say twenty years ago, and make him the best mixed tape / CD / 8-track / whatever media you deem necessary.  The media may help set the mood a little.  If you can find enough of his favorite music, then do a little research of your own.  It’s not to hard to find some top 40 hits from just about any year on the net.  Just get googling.

Other digital media works well.  Analog media actually I suppose, as for some of us there wasn’t a whole lot of digital storage back in our twenties.  Movies are what I was thinking of actually.  Some old movie posters decorating the walls works.  Barring that, you could have a collection of old movies playing silently on a TV in the background.  So it doesn’t conflict with conversation or other music, just keep it muted.

Clothes are of course important to any occasion.  Find an appropriate birthday suit for the birthday boy.  I did say appropriate of course.  Unless you intend on having a very short guest list.  Then, find clothes for yourself that would be appropriate to the time your aiming for.  Be sure your guests are aware as well.  Stuff that’s dated works really well.  Concert shirts come immediately to mind, but use your imagination, and I’m sure you’ll think up plenty more.

Speaking of guests, make sure to invite some of them as well.  Especially, if they figured prominitely in the time period your looking for.  Even if the old birthday guy hasn’t spoken to them in 20 years.  They’re the best kind actually, as they will truly make him feel like he’s slipped back in time.  So, there ya go.  Building a time machine isn’t really all that hard.  Now all you have to do, is get your soon to be 40 year old to the party on time.
