To clarify, this video is designed to accompany an article at cameralabs . com for anyone thinking of upgrading from a Rebel to a full-frame model like the 5D. It’s not a standalone review of the 5D like my other videos.

  3. meantux on January 31st, 2009 4:52 pm

You qualified the casing as a sturdy one on the 5D, it maybe better than any rebel but it’s far from being as sturdy as the old 10D.

Don’t get me wrong, I really appreciated the upgrade I made from 10D to 5D some 2 1/2 years ago but I also didn’t regret keeping the 10D at hand for the 3 times I had to send the 5D for repairs, something I never had to do for the old 10D even if I’ve beaten the old one more.

And you never will be able to, unless Canon stupidly decide they want to fit a crop frame sensor the 5D, which they never will.

That’s a tough one, but the models I’d recommend right now are in the best buys section at cameralabs . com…

What is you favorite DSLR Gordon?

all i can say is don’t hesitate, buy 5d m2 its the best camera there is.

  13. rustynasty143 on January 31st, 2009 4:52 pm

Oh they will bring the price down in three years time dude. you can always benefit on a 21 megapixel like the 5d m2 you just have to find out what, camera wont do everything for you.

I have been using the 5d with 24-105 f4L for 18 months. It’s a great camera. Now the 5d Mk 11 is available I am tempted to upgrade to that. But I doubt 22mpx will be of any benefit in a hand-held situation – which is virtually 100% of my shooting these days, so I can’t see an extra £1600 with trade in value being worth the trouble, or the cost. Come on Canon, make it worth my while by bringing the price down.

Nice video! But I still can’t use EF-S lenses on it :(

Hi DJJOHN, I’d recommend checking out our Canon 5D Mark II preview at cameralabs . com so you’re sure about all the differences – you may also enjoy our most recent Sony A900 review. If you want to discuss it further, feel free to post on the cameralabs forums!

    Hi Gordon,
I am about to buy a 5D in the near future, with some lenses but then i had this thought, “will it be more clever to save the money for a Mark II and buy a single lens?”. I shall also notice that i know alot about DSLRs, but i never had one – so if i buy 5D it is practicly, my first DLSR.
Thanks, and thanks for the videoes as well!

Are you talking about error 99 on the 5D or 50D? I’ve never seen it personally on a 5D, but I did have it once on the 50D while testing it – see my review at cameralabs . com for details. And if you are thinking of the 5D, remember the 5D Mark II will be out in a month – see our preview, again at cameralabs…

  19. certifiedsonny on January 31st, 2009 4:52 pm

    great review!
I’m planning to buy one. I’m just concerned about a possible hardware issue of the 50D. some say it produces error 99.

  20. cameralabs on January 31st, 2009 4:52 pm

Yeah I thought I might do one…! It’s not out for a couple of months yet though so in the meantime, check out our preview at cameralabs . com!

After all the speculation, Canon announced the EOS 5D Mk II on 17 September 2008. It looks like a killer, but still no built-in flash. The body RRP is $2,600 in the US (£2,299 in the UK), and the kit with the EF 24-105mm f/4 L IS USM lens is $3,499 in the US and (£3,049 in the UK). Why is everything so expensive here in the UK? You’re not thinking of doing a video on the 5D Mk II are you Gordon?
