Ok, all you wafflers out there, this ones for you. In case you haven’t noticed, I run a little camera search tool on this site called the Personal Camera Finder. It’s goal is to help people find a camera that has all the features they want within their budget. One of the questions I ask my visitors is whether they would buy a camera online.

I know relatively few people in the real work that would order items online. So, I’ve always been of the notion, that people look for information on their future purchases online, but actually make the purchase in a bricks and mortar store at their local strip mall.

Now, assuming that people are telling the truth, I may have been somewhat misguided. I don’t have a large sample size at the moment, but the numbers go something like this. 44% say Yes . . . 34% say Not Sure . . . 14% say Maybe . . . 8% say No. Well, surprise surprise. It looks like like the majority of people say they will buy a digital camera online, a larger chunk 48% (Not Sure & Maybe) are conflicted, and only a small minority say no.

Interesting. Well in the spirit of saving the planet and promotion of a better way of life for all, I’m going to give you undecided masses some good reasons to buy a digital camera online.

Price Price Price

Apart from gathering information about a specific digital camera, the number one reason most people shop online, is price. Even when you factor in shipping charges, buying online is cheaper than in your local mall. It makes sense, when you think about it. For one thing, there’s no expensive retail floor space for the seller to rent, maintain, clean, heat and light. While they probably have a warehouse to stock their inventory, it’s far less glamorous and likely located where real estate prices are considerably lower.

But, the biggest factor in keeping price down, is the absence of sales staff. Or checkout girls, stock boys and door greeters. Buying online may be a little less personal, but it also be considerably cheaper.

It was Henry Ford who said, “They can have any color they want as long as it’s black”, when he first stared out in the burgeoning automotive business. Things have changed just a little since then. Everyone wants something unique to express themselves, and digital cameras are no exception. There are literally thousands of cameras to choose from these days. Amazon alone lists around 2500 items in their digital camera inventory. When was the last time you walked into any store that carried 2500 digital cameras to choose from?

Choice is a good thing. Whatever camera your looking for, I’d say your odds are about 100% good that you’ll find it online.

It’s What George Would Do

If George Jetson was looking for a digital camera, do you think he’d traipse through shopping malls, battle the crowds, and risk getting his fancy space ship dinged in a parking lot? Not likely. He’d just tell the computer on the wall that he needed the latest Canon Digital SLR Rebel XYZ camera for the best price with a case and a 10 terrabyte memory card. Next thing you know, the doorbell would ring. There would be the little solar powered automaton mailman with his new camera, case and memory card. While FedEx is not that fast yet, one day they could be ;)

My point being, shopping online is the way of the future. While it may not happen overnight, there will come a day when shopping malls will go the way of the horse and buggy.

Save The Whales Planet People

These days, everything seems to have a green spin on it, and digital camera shopping is no exception. It’s simply better for the planet and us, to leave a smaller carbon footprint in everything we do. Shopping at a mall pollutes in many ways. Driving to the mall. Heating and lighting big retail spaces. Plastic shopping bags and wrapping.

Analyze This

For the analysis paralysis types in the crowd, the internet is a fascinating place. Heaven help you, if your in a hurry to make a decision quickly though. But, if your one of those that likes to mull over the intricacies and minute details of every purchase, your gonna love shopping online. You’ll find plenty of sites to read reviews, compare features, compare prices, and learn about every little digital camera technology ever spawned. Then and only then. Once you read though the entire digital universe of digital camera cornucopia, you can make your purchase online. Knowing full well you’ve made the best decision.

Easy Peasy

So far we’ve covered price, selection, green stuff, and informed decision making. What other reason could there be to buy a digital camera online? I can think of one more. It’s just plain easier. In the time you’ve taken to read this article, you could have bought your camera. And, with about the same amount of effort. A few clicks, keystrokes and your done. We’re all busy people with to-do lists longer than they should be. Anything that makes life easier gets major kudos points from me.
